Visiting a Neurologist

Published On: January 29th, 20192 min read

Neurology is the science of the structure and function of the nervous system. This branch of medicine studies and treats disorders and diseases of the human brain and nervous system. A neurologist performs diagnostic tests of the brain and spine, addresses both chronic and acute diseases, consults with, and treats patients with nervous system disorders.

Nervous system disorders can often be triggered by both internal and external factors, such as viral infections, poor nutrition, chronic illnesses, metabolic disorders, vascular changes, stress, an inactive lifestyle, or poor posture.

We recommend seeing a neurologist promptly if you experience:
  • Various types of neck, chest, lower back, or back pain
  • Constant headaches, dizziness, or balance disturbances
  • Numbness on one side of the face, head, arms, or legs
  • Movement and coordination difficulties
  • Issues with memory, swallowing reflexes, vision, hearing, or other sensory functions
  • Skin changes or infections
Common neurological diseases include:
  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Cerebral blood circulation disorders
  • Central nervous system diseases (e.g., multiple sclerosis)
  • Degenerative nervous system diseases (e.g., Alzheimer's, Parkinson's disease)
  • Spine diseases
  • Epilepsy
  • Insomnia and other nervous system disorders

Neurologists also care for patients who have suffered brain injuries, strokes, or have undergone brain surgery.

The nervous system is one of the most complex systems in the human body. When it’s challenging to pinpoint the exact cause of pain, it’s wise to consult a neurologist. A neurologist helps patients overcome the impasse created by pain, considering not only symptoms but also the patient's needs and preferences, which are just as important as the pain itself.

Pain is not just a sensory experience but also an emotional one. During a consultation, do not hesitate to share not only your physical but also emotional changes caused by pain. The essential steps of the consultation are outlined below:

  • Pain History: Provide the doctor with all information about your condition. Try to recall when the pain began and describe the circumstances surrounding its onset. Is your pain associated with movement, or does it intensify with certain activities or in a seated position?
  • Describe the Pain: Begin by identifying the location of the pain and how its location has changed over time. Discuss with the neurologist the speed of onset, duration, progression, lessening, and fluctuations of the pain.
  • Identify Pain Triggers: When asked, share which factors commonly trigger your pain. These can include direct triggers, such as specific positions or movements, or indirect ones, such as stress, emotions, or depression. Also, mention factors that reduce the pain, as this will help the doctor choose the most effective treatment.
  • Previous Pain Management: Inform the doctor of any pain treatments you've tried, such as medications, physical therapy, kinesitherapy, manual therapy, or other methods. Have you had any surgeries?

Trusting your neurologist is key to understanding your condition accurately and finding the best treatment approach. Effective pain management will not only improve your well-being and speed up recovery but also enhance your work productivity and overall quality of life.
